Second meeting on opacity in Optimality Theory
Francesc Torres-Tamarit (SFL)
Opacity in OT: OT-CC and HS
Abstract - This talk is a continuation of Giorgio Magri's talk on Opacity, Optimality Theory and Output drivenness. In this session I will present the basic architecture of OT with Candidate Chains (OT-CC, McCarthy 2007), a version of OT in which candidates consist of a finite ordered list of intermediate forms that connects the input with the output each of which differs minimally from the forms that immediately precede and follow them and that show harmonic improvement according to a particular constraint hierarchy. In this model the order of localized unfaithful mappings is accessed by EVAL, which can select opaque outputs as the most harmonic ones. Then I will present the basic architecture of Harmonic Serialism (HS, McCarthy 2000), a related but not equivalent to OT-CC derivational version of OT in which EVAL applies iteratively on a finite set of candidates constrained by gradualness. Although HS is not a general theory of phonological opacity, I will show that a case of cross-level opaque interaction in Friulian between obstruent final devoicing and vowel lengthening can be accounted for in HS with no stipulations and in a unified way (Torres-Tamarit 2015).
