Slurs are a hot topic in recent linguistics and philosophy. They have been given a wide range of analyses: expressive denigration, introduction of a negative perspective, taboo speech. In this talk, we will present an approach to slurs which takes them to be a direct attempt to implement perlocutionary goals of the speaker primarily related to social situatedness and location in social structures. We relate this view to analyses of other phenomena and to general aspects of social meaning.
