Contrast marking in Romance and Germanic languages. Crosslinguistic and intralinguistic comparison through task-elicited speech

The presentation focusses on the notion of Contrast (Lee, Kiefer, and Krifka 2017; Repp, 2010) and the different ways it is marked when information management in different text-types is involved. Crosslinguistic studies based on elicited speech allowed to identify language-specific patterns differentiating discourse construction in different languages (German, Dutch vs. French and Italian), when specific kinds of “contrast” were involved (Dimroth 2002; Dimroth et al. 2010; Benazzo et al. 2012; Turco, Dimroth, and Braun 2012; Turco, Braun, and Dimroth 2014; Benazzo and Andorno 2010). The results draw a coherent picture, in which speakers of German and of French/Italian show different preferences in contrast marking, linked to the linguistic structures available in the languages to mark the information flow: word order flexibility, repertoire of pronouns and particles, prosodic patterns.
